This is an interesting site maintained by John Clare, the Deputy Head at Greenfield School. Lots of useful information to be found – did you know that in Norman times, Aycliffe Village was a concentration camp?

Yes, I have read John Clare’s article, but from where does he get his evidence that Aycliffe was a concentration camp?

When the Normas laid waste to Northern England they rounded up what saxons were left over and basically used them as slave labour ( serfs ).
The layout of most of the villages in the area follow a similar plan, and historical documents also back this up. Its not John Clare using artistic license so to speak.
